The best tips to organize Back to School (and it can be fun)

The first day of school is fast approaching (at least here in Portugal), and if you're anything like us, that can mean one thing: stress! Back-to-school time often means tackling a new-and-improved school schedule, packing kid lunches, buying new clothes and shoes for the kids — then wondering how you'll find time to make it all happen.

But there are some smart hacks you can use to help get things under control with ease. In fact, the first day of school can actually be...fun. So here I share my best tips for balancing comfort with style, getting the kids ready on time, and making it feel like a whole new beginning — instead of a frantic death march.

Make it fun

What's really back-to-school-ready? A backpack!

It all starts with that trusty book bag — the more comfortable it is to wear, the more you'll use it. They come in all different shapes and sizes, but the most important thing is to find one that perfectly fits the way you sit. I recommend going for a backpack made of nylon. This material has the highest breathability level, meaning it's light and breathable enough to be comfortable all day long. It also has a nice frame supporting your back, making the load more evenly distributed. And if you want something a little more stylish, try a synthetic leather or canvas version. Because no one is going to tell you that the backpack makes the kids look like they're dressed up from head to toe.

For kids who spend most of their time playing with action figures or watching shows on a tablet, it's wise also to have a separate carrying case for their devices (in which case, think about getting it in different colors and print-embellished patterns). And even though you'll probably end up taking the book bag everywhere, it's good to make sure you have other options to wear — like an oversized puffy vest or a cool hoodie.

Buy layering pieces instead of new clothes to make the most of your wardrobe. It could be as simple as mixing and matching your favorite tops and bottoms in different color combos. Or, if you want something more elaborate, we're fans of graphic prints that can mix things up without being too distracting.

Get ready on time

You're running late, and the kids are also in a rush — typical school morning drama. But still, everyone manages to look so cute, which leads us to believe that being well-dressed doesn't have to take too much time. Perfect mornings should include a few thoughtful prep tricks that won't add too much stress for anyone.

For example, you can start getting ready the night before by laying your clothes and accessories on your bedside table. Get started with this handy checklist to get things done. There's no reason to rush through getting dressed, especially if you set a time limit. Because you'll likely have time to fix your outfit throughout the day, it might take longer than expected due to accidents requiring a quick change of wardrobe or unexpected errands or distractions. It pays to start early, so you know exactly what you have in your bag at any given time — and what you need to buy before school starts.

And when you're not sure what to wear, it's time for a change of perspective. You can start by looking at the school schedule and the weather forecast to see what will most likely be worn each day. And remember: even if you're a mom who loves getting dressed up, that doesn't mean you have to go all day. Find the perfect combination of comfort and style.

Prep for school lunches and snacks

This one's easy. Please take advantage of those days you'll be at home, but the kids aren't (either because they're already at school, off playing with friends, or both). An excellent way to set up a quick and easy packing system is by keeping backpacks ready in different places. So you only need to grab your bag a couple of times throughout the day. For example, one backpack can be held conveniently — like a closet or linen closet — while another could be easily stuffed into a dresser drawer or box. Then all you have to do is grab your lunch and eat it on the go.

Don't rush to shop for clothes and shoes

I’m not saying you should wear the same clothes for a month straight. But if you have the option to buy a new pack of clothes for school, I suggest taking it. You'll save time and hassle by buying all your uniform pieces at once — like shirts, pants, or skirts — instead of stocking up on individual items daily (which can require more money and effort). If you really find yourself in dire need of something, I suggest first checking your closet. Most parents put off buying new clothes until it's too late. But if you've got a little extra space, this is a great way to get more use out of the clothes you already have — while also saving a lot of money.

Determine how many outfits you'll need and then go shopping. It's nice to get comfortable with your outfits when first starting school. But if you can't decide which ones are your favorites, try them all out simultaneously. Some people like to make their kids wear a uniform for this reason (it's also pretty good for growing bodies). And it's easy just to toss a uniform into a book bag and be done with it — no need to worry about what your kid looks like from head to toe when you've got that one item covered. Try not to stress too much about what the kids will wear in between school and home activities. What's the point of buying new clothes if you aren't using them, right?

I hope this was helpful for you, and good luck with your kids' new year of school!

I'll see you next week!
